Carla Berg Award

Carla Lorraine Berg

1981 - 2003

Armstrong high school class of 1999

St Cloud State University 2003

High School Carla Berg Award

Established 2004

“This is an award to honor our daughter for a sport she loved so much.  It is not intended for the best player, or the most improved, although they may be one & the same.  It is for the player who enjoys the game of hockey for the simple fun of the game.  Carla was not a good hockey player.  In fact, to turn she would sometimes use her stick as a rudder.  The boards were her friend because she then stopped going forward.  She was a mother hen to the younger player & enjoyed the pizza parties with the players as much as the game itself.  We congratulate this year’s winner & hope you enjoy the hockey game as much as Carla would have.”

COLLEGE CARLA BERG MEMORIAL CUP

Established 2004

WCCHA Champion

Each year, the Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association (WCCHA) Champion is awarded the Carla Berg Memorial Cup, named after Carla Berg, a tireless volunteer for the St. Cloud State University Club Hockey team before a tragic car accident took her life. The current cup trophy replaced the original traveling version, which now permanently resides in St. Cloud. Currently, each champion recieves a replica bowl to keep with their program.

She graduated and ended up at St. Cloud with her boyfriend, Chris Reinholdz. Chris got the guys together to start a Club Hockey Team for St. Cloud and Carla continued what she did best. She managed a lot of the team's schedule, set up the vans and trips, set up fund raising which included work schedules at the Xcel Center so the guys could help offset the costs and always found the post party after the game. She even tried to talk Husky Varsity Coach Craig Dahl out of some used uniforms - but to no avail. She was very important to the Club Hockey's first team and as a tribute they dedicated this season to her memory.

We are very honored to have an annual scholarship set up in Carla's name for some young lady who enjoys the game. If this scholarship helps in some way to improve your skills but more importantly your love for hockey we know Carla would be happy. Congratulations to this years winner.

The Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association is a conference featuring members from Universities and Colleges in the Upper Midwest. All members compete in the Central Region at the Division II level of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

High School First Annual Carla Berg Award Speech 2004

Dear Family and Friends,

We would like to thank Shelley & Tim Berg for establishing a hockey camp scholarship to be awarded each year at the AHS Girls’ Hockey Banquet.  The award will go to a girl who best exemplifies Carla’s spirit and love for the game.

On Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the Armstrong Girls Hockey Banquet, Jason Paurus (former AHS Girls’ Hockey Coach) presented the Carla Berg Award to Danielle Hartmann and Stephanie Sessions.  We would like to share his tribute to Carla with you.

Thank you again for giving me the honor of presenting the 1st annual Carla Berg award.

Carla Berg played two years for the Armstrong Girls’ Hockey team (97/98 and 98/99).  She was voted by her teammates JV Captain for her senior year.

Carla Berg was always positive and always smiling!  Every time I picture her I see her smiling.  She was always willing to help others out.  She was the mother hen of the AHS girl’s hockey program.  She would take the younger girls under her wing and help them out.  One of the many things I will remember about Carla was the spirit she put forth in planning and organizing team get togethers.  She organized the JV girls to help out at the Shriners Childrens hospital.  She was amazing!  There are people that you meet during your life that give you a better understanding of what life is all about! Carla Berg was Full of LIFE, Full of ENERGY, and Full of SPIRIT!

She knew the importance of winning and losing but she was way ahead of her time when it came down to the important things in life.  Relationships with others, treating others with respect and kindness, and giving of herself not for the benefit of herself but for the benefit of others.  I will always remember Carla and her talks with me.  She would always say coach I need to talk to you.  As I look back I got more out of those talks than Carla did.  Carla Berg touched many lives!

2003 CELEBRATION OF CARLA'S LIFE

October 9, 2003
Dearest Berg Family,

On September 25, 2003 family and friends of Carla gathered downtown in celebration of Carla's life. Friends made ribbons and buttons which were sold to benefit the Carla Berg Memorial Fund. Over 500 ribbons were purchased by her friends and community members of the City of St. Cloud. A table was set up in tribute to Carla to display photos and provide guests a scrapbook to sign. The table was staffed by friends and donations were accepted. The night ended as Carla herself would have wanted…over a thousand people gathered in the downtown street to raise their glass in memory to Carla. A toast was presented in honor of Carla's loving spirit and passion for life.

On October 10, 2003 friends of Carla purchased a Bench Swing in loving memory of Carla Lorraine Berg. The swing was purchased from the funds raised and donated to the Carla Berg Memorial Fund. The swing will be placed in Munsinger Gardens in St. Cloud, MN. It is our hope that this memorial will bring a sense of peace to your loss and be a beautiful tribute to the life Carla lived with us.
Each of us will always remember Carla's love for life in our hearts. She touched all of our lives and we are all grateful for the blessing of her friendship. On behalf of all of Carla's friends and loved ones, I would like to bestow my greatest sympathy for your loss. May you never walk alone in your grief, for we are here to carry you through. We hold your family in our prayers and daily thoughts. If there is any way we may be of assistance to your family, please do not hesitate to contact us. I have been truly blessed by Carla's friendship and I have continued to be blessed by the love of your family. Carla left her greatest legacy here with us…she left the love she had for her friends, so that we may all continue on…loving each other as she taught us to love one another.
~ May the Lord bless you and keep you, May the Lords face shine upon you, and give you peace. ~

Sincerely Yours,
