“This is an award to honor our daughter for a sport she loved so much. It is not intended for the best player, or the most improved, although they may be one & the same. It is for the player who enjoys the game of hockey for the simple fun of the game. Carla was not a good hockey player. In fact, to turn she would sometimes use her stick as a rudder. The boards were her friend because she then stopped going forward. She was a mother hen to the younger player & enjoyed the pizza parties with the players as much as the game itself. We congratulate this year’s winner & hope you enjoy the hockey game as much as Carla would have.”

Each year, the Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association (WCCHA) Champion is awarded the Carla Berg Memorial Cup, named after Carla Berg, a tireless volunteer for the St. Cloud State University Club Hockey team before a tragic car accident took her life. The current cup trophy replaced the original traveling version, which now permanently resides in St. Cloud. Currently, each champion recieves a replica bowl to keep with their program.
She graduated and ended up at St. Cloud with her boyfriend, Chris Reinholdz. Chris got the guys together to start a Club Hockey Team for St. Cloud and Carla continued what she did best. She managed a lot of the team's schedule, set up the vans and trips, set up fund raising which included work schedules at the Xcel Center so the guys could help offset the costs and always found the post party after the game. She even tried to talk Husky Varsity Coach Craig Dahl out of some used uniforms - but to no avail. She was very important to the Club Hockey's first team and as a tribute they dedicated this season to her memory.
We are very honored to have an annual scholarship set up in Carla's name for some young lady who enjoys the game. If this scholarship helps in some way to improve your skills but more importantly your love for hockey we know Carla would be happy. Congratulations to this years winner.
The Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association is a conference featuring members from Universities and Colleges in the Upper Midwest. All members compete in the Central Region at the Division II level of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
Dear Family and Friends,
We would like to thank Shelley & Tim Berg for establishing a hockey camp scholarship to be awarded each year at the AHS Girls’ Hockey Banquet. The award will go to a girl who best exemplifies Carla’s spirit and love for the game.
On Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the Armstrong Girls Hockey Banquet, Jason Paurus (former AHS Girls’ Hockey Coach) presented the Carla Berg Award to Danielle Hartmann and Stephanie Sessions. We would like to share his tribute to Carla with you.
Thank you again for giving me the honor of presenting the 1st annual Carla Berg award.
Carla Berg played two years for the Armstrong Girls’ Hockey team (97/98 and 98/99). She was voted by her teammates JV Captain for her senior year.
Carla Berg was always positive and always smiling! Every time I picture her I see her smiling. She was always willing to help others out. She was the mother hen of the AHS girl’s hockey program. She would take the younger girls under her wing and help them out. One of the many things I will remember about Carla was the spirit she put forth in planning and organizing team get togethers. She organized the JV girls to help out at the Shriners Childrens hospital. She was amazing! There are people that you meet during your life that give you a better understanding of what life is all about! Carla Berg was Full of LIFE, Full of ENERGY, and Full of SPIRIT!
She knew the importance of winning and losing but she was way ahead of her time when it came down to the important things in life. Relationships with others, treating others with respect and kindness, and giving of herself not for the benefit of herself but for the benefit of others. I will always remember Carla and her talks with me. She would always say coach I need to talk to you. As I look back I got more out of those talks than Carla did. Carla Berg touched many lives!
