What is Squirt Camp?

Squirt Camp: Hockey Skills Development Program: September - November

In 2005-2006 the Armstrong and Cooper Youth Hockey Association implemented its first Squirt Camp: Hockey Skills Development Program.

Why? Emphasize skill development and skills progression in a refined format.

  1. Maximize the use of ice time for cost containment. We can have all of the Squirts on the ice at the same time.
  2. Develop our coaching staff and leverage the use of a professional skills instructor
  3. Allow for a longer practice evaluation period prior to determining association teams in both practice and scrimmage settings.

How?  The Squirt Camp is scheduled to run for 6-8 weeks or approximately 20-24 on ice session sessions. It starts the end of September and runs until November. The complete Squirt season will look like this:

August: Player Registration, Coaches Meetings, Ice Planning, and Curriculum Development.

September and October:  The Skills Program will begin in late September. The Squirt A coaches along with hired skllls instructors lead the program.  There will be skill drills, scrimmages, small area games, technical skating, and an emphasis on fun.

November:  The program will finish with an evaluatio n and the Squirt Cup.  Based upon the evaluation, the teams will be formed for District Play. Players will be placed on a team that best matches their skill level. The teams are formed, B and C level coaches are named, team mangers are selected, and the official  “Squirt season” begins with first team-based practices.

December, January,  February, and March: Season is underway with the District 3 Games (Home and Away vs. Hopkins, Orono, Wayzata, North Metro, Mound Westonka, Crow River-Delano, and  Osseo - Maple Grove starting mid-December (12-18 games depending on level) and the traveling season is underway.   The season ends in the Middle of March. Each team will have three tournaments.   It is up to the individual teams if they take on additional tourneys home or away tourneys.
